*Vaccines, Routine Wellness Screening Recommendations:
Our recommendations as to vaccinations, routine testing and preventative medicine are outlined below. Ultimately, the decision about what tests are run and what vaccines
are given (aside from a rabies vaccine, which is required by state law for all pets) is up
to you, as a pet owner. Our job is to provide information to help you decide what is appropriate for your pet. Each of our recommendations will be discussed with you during
a consultation to make sure you understand what we are doing and why.

Physical exam- yearly or every 6 months: As pets age much faster than humans and have
a tendency to hide illnesses and injuries, a thorough physical exam is vitally important
to detect small problems before they become big ones.

Wellness screens- Offered yearly for every pet and strongly recommended yearly in dogs over the age of 6 and cats over the age of 8. A wellness screen is a blood test, usually involving a thorough blood cell count and an organ function test and can be very basic or very detailed. Often, a thyroid screen is included. A wellness screen can often detect problems before your pet shows any signs of an illness, and it provides us with a baseline
for comparison if your pet does become ill in the future.

Fecal test- Recommended yearly, this test screens for exposure to common parasites. Remember, dogs and cats do not wear shoes and they clean their feet by licking
them, so they are exposed to a wide variety of intestinal parasites. Some of these parasites pose a health risk for humans, particularly children.

Heart worm test- Recommended yearly for dogs. Heart worms are long, spaghetti shaped parasites that live in blood vessels of the lungs and are transmitted by mosquitos. With early detection, these parasites can be eliminated before they cause damage to the heart.

Heart worm and intestinal parasite prevention- Recommended monthly, year-round for all dogs and for cats that go outdoors, even puppies and kittens.

Flea/tick prevention- Recommended for all dogs and cats through the warmer months.

FeLV/FIV test- Recommended for all kittens

Vaccines- We vaccinate based on a risk assessment screen to determine which vaccines are appropriate for your pet. Core vaccines are those that are recommended for all pets regardless of lifestyle, and non-core vaccines are those that are only given to at-risk pets. Vaccine titers can be tested after the initial puppy/kitten series of vaccines to determine when or if a vaccine booster is needed, as an alternative to vaccinating at regular intervals.

Rabies (Core)- Rabies is a fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans. Due to the nature of the disease, state law requires vaccination of all dogs and cats. The vaccine
is given to puppies and kittens when they are 16 weeks or older. A booster is given one year later, then every three years after that.

Distemper (Core)- (DAPP for dogs, FVRCP for cats)- This vaccine is given as an
initial series of two to three vaccines in puppies and kittens. A booster is given one
year later, and then every three years or as needed based on titer testing.

Leptospirosis (Core)- Leptospirosis is a disease endemic to this area that is transmitted by wildlife and can be contagious to humans. The vaccine is recommended for most dogs and is given as an initial series of two vaccines, then as a yearly booster.
A leptospirosis vaccine may be required for dogs going to certain boarding facilities
or dog parks.

Bordatella (Non-core)- Bordatella is commonly called the kennel cough vaccine and may be required for dogs going to boarding kennels or dog parks. It is given as a nasal spray every six months to a year.

Lyme (Non-core)- Transmitted by ticks, this vaccine is recommended for dogs who
will be exposed to ticks and is given as an initial series of two vaccines, then
yearly thereafter.

FeLV (Non-core)- This vaccine is given transdermally and is recommended for all cats who may be exposed to other cats by going outdoors, traveling or boarding.
